This is a leisurely walk using local little known/used public rights of way. We walk by the River Mersey and along paths, tracks, fields (which can be muddy in parts) and also include a short section of the Trans Pennine Trail.

Sunday May 19th Water-cum-Jolly Dale, Cressbrook/Monks Dale from Miller’s Dale

Miller’s Dale is on the B6049 which runs between the A6 at the Southwest end and the A623 at the Northeast.
A splendid walk following the Monks Dale valley floor, before joining the Limestone Way along a quiet road and footpath field crossings to Tideswell village and down the lane to Litton. Then crossing farmland fields before dropping into Tansley Dale, onto Cressbrook Dale following the stream through the trees and river to Water-cum-Jolly Dale before joining the Monsall Trail through Millers Dale back to the car park. Total ascent 436m 1431ft

Wednesday May 22nd Chee Dale and the Monsal Trail

We’ll initially climb to cross farmland at Blackwell, Priestcliffe and Brushfield before dropping down to pick up the Monsal Trail at the Western end of the famous viaduct. We’ll then follow the trail Westwards, sometimes following other footpaths, before leaving the trail to drop down into Chee Dale, which is a dramatic, deep sided gorge, along quite an exciting and interesting path, but which can be difficult in wet conditions. We’ll climb out of the Dale at a dramatic bridge between two tunnels, and follow the trail back to the car park at Topley Pike.

Saturday May 25th Hadfield to Marsden – The Pennine Way over Black Hill

The route mainly follows the Pennine Way, from the Longdendale Valley, over Black Hill, until we leave it as we descend to Marsden. We will leave the Pennine Way as it turns off to the West towards Standedge, and we will follow a high level route back into the village.
Notes on transport:- The 8:48 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Glossop will arrive in Hadfield at 9:28. N.B. The current timetable runs until 18th May 2013, so check that the time is still correct before travelling. A Wayfarer ticket will cover travel within Greater Manchester. According to the Northern Rail website, these cost £ 10, with an age concession available at £ 5. (N.B. The website was dated 2009 “until further notice,” so check availability and cost of Wayfarer tickets.) A separate ticket will need to be purchased for travel between Marsden and Greenfield on the return journey. Trains run from Marsden to Manchester Victoria at hourly intervals, (N. B. may be subject to change under new timetable.)

A scenic walk zigzagging steeply uphill to Stoodley Pike (which is the name of the hill rather than the monument) with high farmland fields and a woodlands decent to the Withens Clough Reservoir then climbing over the low moor before descending back to the car park. Total ascent 518m 1700ft

The walk starts from Hollingworth Lake passing Owlet Hall and Shore Edge Farm then using the old Drover’s road to reach Blackstone Edge. We use the Pennine Way along the ridge then descend back to the lakeside by another ancient lane. Total ascent 325m 1066ft
